Top 5 Questions:

College Recruiting Contact Periods

Eric Lake from the CaptainU Customer Success team answers your top 5 questions about contact periods for college recruiting.

#1  If coaches can’t reach out to me until September 1st, why should I worry about recruiting until then?

The regulations primarily refer to when coaches are allowed to reach out to you, not the other way around. As an athlete, you are allowed to reach out to coaches before then. Coaches may be building lists of athletes they’d like to recruit once they’re in the clear, so it’s a good idea to proactively reach out to coaches beforehand to make sure you can hit the ground running.

#2 What is the best way to make sure I’m getting looks from coaches?

The best way to get your foot in the door with a college program is to go knock on the door yourself! Be sure to first add as much information about what makes you special as a student-athlete to your CaptainU profile. Add some colleges you’re interested in to the ‘Colleges’ tab on your account.  Then use the CaptainU mail tool to introduce yourself to colleges.

#3 How can I best prepare for the college recruiting season?

If you haven’t already, set up a free CaptainU profile!

It’s important to nail down two things so that you can speak confidently with coaches and so that your profile will stand out to any coaches that find you in searches.

First, think about what makes you stand out as a student-athlete. Are your fundamentals perfect? Are you athletic? Aggressive? Do you excel academically? Pick out 2-3 things that you’re really great at, then show those through your profile and collect ways (think stats, video, etc.) to show coaches why they should be interested in you.

Second, think about what you’re looking for out of a college. Is region important? School size? Division? Are you interested in a specific major? If you can speak to why you’re interested in schools, you’ll be much better equipped to get a coach’s attention.

#4 How can I make my messages stand out?

First, send shorter messages and more often. Be thorough but brief; 2-3 paragraphs is sufficient. Tell the coach why they should be interested in you and why you’re interested in them.

Second, always personalize your messages. Often athletes copy & paste the same message to every coach in the country. The more a coach can tell that you know who you’re speaking with, the more seriously they will take your message.

Lastly, end each message with a call to action. What do you want the coach to do? Ask them to watch your video then give you feedback, or ask a question about their program.  CaptainU gives you a variety of message templates to use when reaching to coaches.
